Styling For Short Hair

Short Hairstyles At Hotscope

Short hair has nowhere to hide. The line is the whole look, so precision matters more here than at any other length, and so does how often you come back. Get both right and it is the sharpest hair in the room.

Five Short Shapes

Short covers everything from a cropped pixie to a bob brushing the shoulders. The differences are small on paper and enormous in the mirror, so here is what each one actually asks of you.

  • Pixie

The shortest shape we cut. All texture and direction, no weight anywhere.

Cut Every 5 To 6 Weeks
  • Crop

Slightly longer through the top with a tight back. Reads bold, styles in minutes.

Cut Every 5 To 6 Weeks
  • French Bob

Jaw length with a blunt line and usually a fringe. The most fashion forward short shape.

    Cut Every 6 Weeks
  • Chin Bob

One clean line at the chin. Classic, thick looking and the easiest short shape to dry.

Cut Every 6 To 8 Weeks
  • Textured Bob

Bob length with the weight broken up so it moves instead of sitting flat.

    Cut Every 8 Weeks

Five Minute Styling

Short hair is styled at the root, not the ends. These are the three routines that cover almost every short client we see, split by what your hair actually does.

If Your Hair Is Fine

Lift First, Product Second

  1. Dry upside down at the roots until fully dry
  2. A pea sized amount of light paste in your palms
  3. Push the shape into place rather than combing it

About 5 minutes

If Your Hair Is Thick

Control The Bulk

  1. Rough dry, then smooth the sides flat with your hands
  2. Cream through the ends to stop it expanding
  3. Leave the top alone, that is where the shape lives

About 7 minutes

If Your Hair Is Curly

Define, Do Not Fight

  1. Leave in and gel on soaking wet hair
  2. Diffuse on low, cupping curls towards the scalp
  3. Scrunch the cast out once completely dry

About 10 minutes

The Honest Part

What Short Hair Asks Of You

Short hair is genuinely less work in the morning and genuinely more commitment across the year. Both things are true, and it is better to know before the cut than after it.

The Rebook Rhythm

Most short shapes hold their line for around six weeks. After that you are wearing a different haircut, whether you meant to or not.

  • More Salon Visits

Five to eight weeks rather than the eight to twelve a longer cut allows. Budget for it the way you would a standing appointment.

  • Product, Placed Properly

Short hair needs a little product at the roots to hold its shape. Less than you think, and never through the ends alone.

  • A Grow Out Plan

Going back to the shoulders takes over a year. The awkward stage is months three to six, and shaping trims are what get you through it.

  • The Right Shape

Texture and face shape decide which short cut works. Your stylist will tell you honestly if a photo will not translate.

Good To Know

Short Hairstyle Questions

How Much Is Short Hair Styling At Hotscope?

Short hair styling starts from $35 and takes about 45 minutes. Density and the finish you want both affect the price, which your stylist confirms at the consultation before starting.

How Often Does Short Hair Need Cutting?

Every 5 to 8 weeks. Short shapes lose their line first, because the difference between the cut and the grown out version shows within weeks rather than months. It is the real cost of short hair, and worth budgeting for.

Is Short Hair Easier To Look After?

Easier in some ways, not all. Drying takes minutes rather than half an hour, but the shape needs attention every morning and the salon visits come around faster. Short hair is low time, not low effort.

Will Short Hair Suit My Face?

Where the shortest point sits matters more than the length itself. A crop that finishes above the jaw draws attention upwards, while a longer front softens strong angles. See the face shape guide on our haircuts page and bring photos.

How Long Does It Take To Grow Out?

Roughly half an inch a month, so a pixie to the shoulders is usually over a year. The stage everyone hates is months three to six, which is exactly when shaping trims matter most rather than avoiding the salon.

Can Curly Hair Be Cut Short?

Yes, and short curls can be excellent when the cut follows the curl pattern rather than fighting it. Shrinkage is the thing to plan for, because curly hair dries far shorter than it looks wet.

What Products Does Short Hair Need?

Less than you think and lighter than you expect. A small amount of paste, cream or texture spray placed at the roots and through the ends does more than a handful of anything heavy.

Can I Still Tie Short Hair Up?

Below chin length, mostly yes. Above it, you are working with clips, pins and headbands instead of ponytails, which is worth thinking about before a big cut in a Texas summer.
